Iron oxide pigments are a class of inorganic pigments primarily composed of iron oxides (Fe₂O₃ , FeOOH, Fe₃O₄). They are widely used in industries such as construction, coatings, plastics, ceramics, paper, and rubber due to their excellent chemical stability, weather resistance, non-toxicity, and diverse color range, making them one of the most commonly used industrial pigments.

Main Types

Iron oxide pigments can be classified based on the oxidation state of iron and crystal structure:

Iron Oxide Red (Fe₂O₃):

 

Red or reddish-brown, composed of ferric iron (Fe³⁺), with an α-type (hematite) or γ-type (maghemite) crystal structure.

High heat resistance  (up to  1200°C),  lightfast,  and resistance to  acids  and alkalis. Commonly used in construction materials, coatings, and plastics.

Iron Oxide Yellow (FeOOH):

 

Yellow, chemically α-FeOOH (goethite). Dehydrates to iron oxide red when heated above 200°C.

Bright color but lower heat resistance, mainly used in ambient-temperature coatings and building materials.

Iron Oxide Black (Fe₃O₄):


Black or gray-black, composed of magnetite (mixed Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺). Exhibits conductivity and magnetism, used in magnetic materials, electronics, and as a black pigment.

Iron Oxide Brown:

Typically, a  blend  of  iron  oxide  red,  yellow,  and  black,  or  produced  by calcining iron oxide yellow ("calcined brown").

Iron Oxide Orange/Green/Blue:

Produced through specialized processes or by combining with other metal oxides;
